Chapter 31: Done Properly
Carla came up the drive on foot with one small bag, and she stopped ten steps from the table.
Thirteen people stopped talking.
"Hello," she said.
Luca's mother stood up and pulled out the empty chair.
"Sit," she said. "You're thin. The eggs went cold hours ago, so you'll have the lamb."
Carla sat.
Nobody said anything for a long moment.
Then the old uncle with the cane leaned across the table and said, loudly, "Is this the one who read out her own crimes in front of a church?"
"Yes," Carla said.
"Good. Take the bread. The rest of us haven't the nerve."
Someone laughed, and then everyone was passing dishes, and Carla ate a plateful of lamb with her head down and tears dropping on the china.
I didn't touch her.
I put a glass of wine by her hand, and she looked at it, and then up at me.
"Tomorrow," she said. "I have something to ask you. Not tonight."
"All right."
"Thank you for the place."
"Thank Luca's mother."
"I did," Carla said. "She told me to eat."
That night Luca found me on the terrace in the dark.
He was holding a small velvet box, and he looked like a man about to be sentenced.
"I want to do the wedding again," he said.
"We're married."
"We signed papers in a courthouse, with your sister in white and half my family glaring. You wore a borrowed coat." He opened the box. "I want your whole family on the grass, and my mother crying, and a priest, and you in a dress you picked."
