Chapter 16: The Furo

The water was hot enough to make me gasp.

My grandmother had lit the fire under the furo herself, at four in the afternoon.

Then she had gone to bed with her door shut and the radio turned up loud.

The tub sat in the back yard under the mango tree, a square of dark cedar bound in copper.

Steam rose off it into the stars.

I stepped over the rim and sank down to my chin.

Dean and Manny stood on the wet boards and watched me.

"Six days," I said.

"I'm calling it a week."

"Mari," Manny said, and his whole face lit.

"Here are my terms."

I put my arms along the rim.

"I say when and I say how, and I say stop if I want to, and you both stop that second."

"Always," Dean said.

"I'm not forgiving you for free," I said.

"I'm forgiving you a little, tonight, and then I'm going to decide about more."

"That's fair," Manny said.

"That's more than fair, that's a miracle, can I get in?"

"Slowly," I said.

They took their clothes off on the boards in the dark, and the yellow light from the kitchen window fell across their backs.

Dean got in first.

He lowered himself onto the bench along the far side and let his breath go in a long sigh.

The water rose around his chest.

Manny got in beside me with a groan and a wave that went over the edge.

The tub held the three of us if nobody minded knees.

Nobody did.

I moved through the water to Dean and climbed onto his lap, my knees on the bench on either side of his hips.

He put his hands on my waist and held them there, very still.

"You're burning," he said.

"I like it."

I kissed him.

I kissed him slowly, with the steam curling between our faces and the water lapping at my shoulders.

His hands slid up my back and held on.

I felt Manny come up behind me.

His chest pressed into my spine, hot and slick.

He pushed my wet hair over one shoulder and put his mouth on the back of my neck.

"Hi," he said, against my skin.

"Hi," I said.

His big hands came around from behind and cupped my breasts, and his thumbs found my nipples under the water.
