Chapter 8: The Rain

Dean's POV

Manny's truck slid to a stop across the exit of the lot, and the door slammed before the engine died.

I was out of the sedan before I had made a decision.

I had left Mari in the back seat with her blouse half buttoned, and I would think about that later.

Rain hit my face and ran into my collar.

Manny came across the gravel with his fists open.

"You took her out of my father's yard," Manny said.

"She got in," I said.

"You were waiting at the end of the drive with your lights off."

"I was waiting because she was in a house where your father threatened to put me in the harbor," I said.

"He didn't mean it," Manny said.

"Manny, he meant it."

"Don't call me Manny."

He hit me.

I had known it was coming, and I still did not get out of the way, because something in me wanted it.

His fist landed on my cheekbone and sent me back against the car.

I hit him in the stomach, then in the jaw.

He grunted and grabbed my shirt, and we went down on the gravel, rolling.

The rain beat on both of us.

It was ugly and short.

I have been taught since I was a boy how to hurt a Rapoza, and I found I did not remember any of it.
