Chapter 22: Emerald Cove

Emerald Cove was a beige building on a frontage road by the expressway.

It had a parking lot, a dry fountain and a sign with two letters missing.

I went on a Saturday in January. I took the driver, but I made him wait in the car.

Chase opened the door before I knocked.

He'd been watching from the window.

"Hi, Mom."

The condo was one bedroom.

A gray couch. A TV on a cardboard box. A kitchen the size of a closet, very clean.

The view was the parking lot and, past it, the cars going by on the expressway, all day and all night.

He made coffee in a pod machine and handed it to me in a mug that said PEMBROKE GROUP ANNUAL GOLF OUTING.

We sat on the gray couch.

He didn't say anything for a while.

Then he got up and came back with a calendar from the kitchen wall.

Every other Sunday was circled in red pen, all the way back to October.

"Visiting days," he said.

"Brielle."

"She's in Decatur. It's three hours each way." He put the calendar on the coffee table between us. "I go every time."

"Does she see you?"

"Sometimes." He looked at the circles. "Mostly she asks for money for her lawyer. Twice she told the guard she didn't know me. Once she just sat there and cried for the whole hour and didn't say anything."
