Rain was drumming on a roof.
A small roof. Close over my head.
I opened my eyes and saw a steering wheel.
My car. The call-center parking lot in Dayton. The windshield streaming.

Young hands. Bitten nails. A hair tie around one wrist.
I turned the rearview mirror and looked.
Brown ponytail. The dent in my hair where the headset sat. Twenty-seven.
Me.
The clock on the dashboard said 12:58.
Six minutes after I'd walked out of the building.
One last line of text hung in the air over the dashboard.

I'd lived eleven months in that book, and here it was the same wet Thursday in April, and my lunch break wasn't even over.
My phone rang on the passenger seat.
HOLLY.
I nearly dropped it.
"Hello?"
The scream came through so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear.

"I know. I'm in the car."
