Chapter 15: Rebound

"Delete it," Beck said.

He'd gone up three steps before I saw him move.

Carver let the door swing shut in his face.

Through the glass we watched him walk away, typing with his thumb.

Beck stood at the top of the steps with his hand flat on the door.

"Don't," I said. "It's locked after ten. And he wants you to."

He took his hand off the glass.

He walked me home.

At Hartwell's door he said, "I'm sorry," and I said, "You didn't film it," and neither of us felt better.

The video went up at 6:10 the next morning.

Carver posted it to his own account and the freshman group chat at the same time.

The two of us on the arena steps, lit from above, our foreheads together.

The audio was bad, but you could hear him.

"I've wanted to do this since July."

Carver had cut it right before I stopped him.

So it looked like I didn't.

The caption said, "My catfish rebound with my guild's charity case. Beck took her for points."

By eight it had thirty thousand views.

"she lost 90 lbs to get passed down lmao"

"help desk guy really said finders keepers"

"the whole team is a charity project, look at it"

Somebody had made a graphic of our team logo with a donation jar on it.

Betsy was sitting on my bed in her scrubs, reading with her jaw tight.

"What does 'for points' mean?" she said.

"Guild stuff. You get points for taking a dare in the chat."

"So he's saying Beck took you on a dare."

"Yes."

The team chat started blowing up at 9.

The sophomore, typing one-handed from the splint: "I would fight him with my good arm."

Then, at 10:14, the grad student.

"I'm out. Sorry. I can't do this one."

I found him at noon in the chemistry building, third floor, in a lab with a sign on the door that said GOGGLES BEYOND THIS POINT.
