Chapter 15: The Auction
The tuxedo came with a note from Bernie that said, in capital letters, OVER THE JERSEY.
Nash held up the jacket and found that her own tailor had cut it two sizes large through the chest.
He put it on in the hotel mirror.
He looked like a very expensive bouncer.
"It's black tie," he told Donnie, who was lying across the other bed eating peanuts. "I can't wear a hockey jersey under a tux."
"You can wear a hockey jersey under anything. It's a lifestyle."
"I'm going to take it off in the coat check."
"Bernie says if you do, she'll sew it to your skin."
"She wouldn't."
"She has the thread in her purse," Donnie said, and offered him a peanut.
The Pucks for Kids winter auction filled the ballroom of a harbor hotel with two hundred people in black.
Nash took a glass of champagne from a tray at the door and slipped around the edge of the room toward the coat check.
He got as far as the velvet rope.
"Brannagh."
Gaspard stood behind him in a plain black tuxedo, with his hands in his pockets and his white scar catching the chandelier.
He looked born in it.
"Lachapelle. You came."
"I am the charity partner."
"It's a tux. I'm in a tux. Look at it, it's a tuxedo."
"It is a tuxedo with a jersey under it."
"I was going to fix that."
"I know." Gaspard did not even raise his voice. "A bet's a bet."
"It's black tie!"
"It is a bet, in black tie." He reached out, calm as a surgeon, and tugged the lapel of the jacket aside so the navy collar of the 29 showed. "There. Better."
"I hate you."
"Come. They are starting."
Lot fourteen was Nash.
