"Here are my terms," Nash had said at five that morning, with his face in a pillow.
"Terms."
"If it's about my life, you ask first. Out loud. In English."
"Yes."
"Not about sex. You can do whatever you want about sex."
"I am glad to hear it."
"About my city. My team. My name. Anything with me in it that I don't know about."
"Yes."
"And you do it in front of people."
Gaspard had lifted his head off the other pillow.
"Why in front of people?"
"Because you're braver when they're watching."
Gaspard had looked at him for a long moment in the gray light.
"That is the most accurate thing anyone has ever said about me," he had said, and gone back to sleep.
At ten o'clock on Tuesday morning the neighborhood rink in Montreal held a hundred and fifty children and a sponsor's banner.
The entire first line of the Montreal team stood on the ice in matching sweaters.

Every kid asked the same thing.
