Chapter 24: His Number on My Back
The door of 1412 swung open on a brick wall.
It was the first thing either of them saw, a long warm red wall.
The city lit it through a window three times the size of a bed.
Gaspard had not changed a single brick.
"You said you wanted it exactly as it was," he said, behind Nash. "In Montreal. I said I would not need it."
"You lied."
"I lied. I needed the wall."
Nash dropped his bag on the floor.
It was the seventeenth of October.
It was a year to the night since a gala and a glass of rye and a hand held one second too long.
Boston had played its first home game of the season, and Boston had won, four to one.
Gaspard had one goal and two assists.
Nash had the other three goals, which he planned to mention for a week.
They had come straight from the rink, in suits, with their game sweaters in a duffel.
"Get it out," Nash said.
"What?"
"The duffel. You carried it up fourteen floors like it was a baby."
Gaspard unzipped it.
He took out a white-and-navy Boston sweater and held it up.
The name across the back said BRANNAGH, and under it was the 17.
Then he reached in again and took out the other.
LACHAPELLE.
Twenty-nine.
Nash laughed so hard he had to sit on the arm of the couch.
"You stole my game sweater."
