Chapter 19: The Raw Files

On Friday night my grandmother's bathroom smelled of lavender soap and hot pipes.

The tub was an old clawfoot that took twenty minutes to fill.

I had never once taken a bath in it that wasn't hurried.

"Get in," I said.

Rafe looked at the tub, and at the size of himself, and at the tub again.

"Jo, I don't think I fit."

"You fit. I've measured."

"You measured the bathtub?"

"I measure everything."

He got in.

The water rose over his chest and slopped over the rim, and he sat with his knees up and an expression of great dignity.

I laughed so hard I had to hold the sink.

Then I dropped my robe and stepped over the side.

I settled between his knees, with my back against his chest.

His hands found my waist.

The water was hot enough to turn my skin pink.

His arms came around me, big and slow, and his chin rested on my head.

"Tomorrow," he said.

"Not tonight," I said. "Tonight is only this."

He picked up the soap.

He washed my shoulders first, and then my arms, one at a time, with his thumbs working the knots out of my neck.

He washed my stomach, and I didn't hold it in.

He cupped the soap-slick weight of my breasts, and I leaned back against him and sighed.

"You like that," he said, against my ear.

"I like that."

"I like it too."

His hand slid lower, under the water, and between my legs.

I gasped and caught the rim of the tub.

He stroked me slowly with two fingers, in time with the water lapping the sides.
