Chapter 5: Forty-One Thousand

"Sole owner," I repeated into the phone.

I was standing at the prep table with a knife in one hand and half an onion in the other, and my eyes were running, and for once it was the onion's fault.

"Come to the bank with ID," Paula said. "They'll show you the statements if you ask in person. Bring somebody if you can."

I told Bram I needed an hour.

He looked at the knife, and the onion, and my face, and wiped his hands on his apron.

"I'll drive," he said.

"You don't have to."

"My truck's already warm."

He didn't say another word until we were parked outside the branch on Fourth Street.

He kept the engine running and handed me a paper bag with a muffin in it.

"I'll be here," he said.

The banker took me into a glass office and asked for my driver's license.

He typed for a long time with a small, stiff frown.

"Ms. Entwistle, the household account was opened in your name eleven months ago," he said. "You're the only owner. Nobody else is on it, and no one is listed as an authorized user."

"Danica Gerrard has the card."

"She has a card issued to you. It carries your signature on the application."

"I never signed that."

He turned his screen toward me anyway.

It was my signature, or close enough to it that I wanted to be sick.
