Chapter 6: The Charity Brunch

Danica's mother's club had white tablecloths, a string quartet, and a dozen women in pastel jackets.

I walked in wearing my work blacks and a coat that smelled like onions.

Danica rose from the head table with both arms open.

"Hazel! You came. Everyone, this is Neil's wife. She's had such a hard week."

A dozen faces turned toward me with practiced sympathy.

"Sit, sweetheart," Danica said. "We're all friends here."

I didn't sit.

I took the two-tailed coin out of my pocket and set it in the middle of her bread plate.

"Would you turn that over for me?"

She glanced at it and smiled. "Is this a game?"

"Both sides are the same. Neil has used it on me every month for a year. The winner got to keep my paycheck, and you won every time."

A woman near me put down her fork.

Danica's smile didn't slip. "Hazel. Honey. A coin is a silly little way to keep the peace in a house."

"It cost me forty-one thousand dollars."

I took the bank statements out of my bag and spread them across the white cloth.

"This account is in my name. I opened it, according to the bank, eleven months ago, and I never did. You've had the card the whole time. Every other Saturday, my pay comes out of a machine on Route 9, in cash, and you give me twenty dollars a day for groceries out of what's left."
