Chapter 20: Last Move

We were dressed and in the hatchback in four minutes.

Dash drove the way he did everything.

The sticker on the glove box said I BRAKE FOR BUGS, and he ran the yellow light on Broadway.

"This one is mine," I said. "You stay at the door."

"Tell me why, so I understand it."

"Because she's mine to finish."

He gripped the wheel.

"Okay," he said. "I'll stand there like a coat rack."

It was eight minutes to midnight when we pulled up at the warehouse.

The lobby lights were on, and through the glass I could see Gus behind his desk with his arms folded.

In front of the desk stood a woman in a cream coat and a man in a camel one.

He carried a slim laptop bag in both hands.

She held something small and gray, with a strip of masking tape on it.

Dash stopped just inside the glass doors and put his hands in his pockets.

I felt him not move.

I walked across the marble toward them with my sneakers squeaking.

"Fire code," Gus was saying, in a very bored voice. "Nobody leaves the building after midnight until I sign the sheet."

"I have a pen somewhere. I'll find it."
