Chapter 6: Rain

Ingrid spent all of Friday interviewing the engineers.

She sat in the glass conference room with her cane across her knees, and one by one they went in sweating and came out gray.

His car was old, a dented hatchback with a cracked dashboard and a sticker on the glove box that said I BRAKE FOR BUGS.

"Don't say it," he said.

"I didn't say anything."

"You were going to say that a CEO should drive something nicer."

"I was going to say the sticker's a lie. You haven't braked once."

He laughed, and the wipers beat a slow time over it.

For the whole drive he talked.

He talked about his first apartment, which had a stove that only lit on Tuesdays.

He talked about a goat he had once owned for nine days.
