Chapter 11: The Night
Harvey was at the bottom of my stairs when I came back down for the second bag of trash.
He had followed the cab, and he had not come up.
"I said I'd text," I said.
"You did not text."
"I was busy being ambushed by your cousin."
His face changed.
I held up my phone and pressed play.
Cory's voice came out into the stairwell, clear and a little breathless.
Mallory was supposed to keep him busy until midnight. She'd tell him the wrong date, and he'd miss it.
Harvey listened to the whole thing with his hands in his coat pockets.
When it ended, he said, "That's enough for a judge."
"It's enough for a board, too."
"Yes."
"He said you hadn't told me what the will says."
"I haven't read what it says. I told you that in the corridor."
"You carry that folder everywhere."
"I carry it because my grandfather handed it to me and asked me not to open it until I had a wife." He shifted it under his arm. "It sounded like a joke."
I looked at him.
He did not look away.
Four minutes outside a door, and he'd told me. A folder he hadn't opened, and he'd told me that too.
"I decided something," I said.
"What?"
"I'm going to decide what you are. I'm deciding now."
I went up the stairs, and after a moment, I heard him follow.
My apartment was boxes and a bed.
I took off my coat, and then my sweater, and the room was cold on my skin.
He stood in the doorway.
"Close it," I said.
He closed it.
"You've been telling me no for three days," I said. "Rule four, separate rooms, not here, not like this."
