Chapter 18: Two Seats
The table in the boardroom now had nine chairs, because my husband's grandfather had left me his.
I sat in it on Monday morning in a grey suit with my back straight and my hands flat.
On the other side of the wood, Cory's father had two new friends.
They were the two directors who had sold their seats' votes over the weekend, and they sat on either side of him in expensive suits, not looking at anyone.
"The bylaws allow the sale," the director with the white mustache told me quietly. "Your husband's grandfather wrote that clause in 1974. He never imagined anyone would use it."
"Then he didn't know the Fosdicks."
"Nobody did, until they bought the rest of the town."
Harvey sat at the far end of the table with his hands in his lap.
He had promised me he would not vote a share of mine, and he had been strict about it, so strict that he had not said a word to me since breakfast.
The lawyer called the meeting to order.
"Item one," said Cory's father, before he could finish. "A motion to suspend the chief executive pending the court's ruling on the validity of his marriage."
"On what grounds?" said the woman next to the mustache.
"That the marriage is a bargain between two strangers, as the world heard on Friday from the bride herself."
"The bride explained it on Friday," I said.
"She explained nothing. She changed the subject with a screen."
"Is there a second?" said the lawyer.
"I second," said one of the new men, quietly.
"Then we'll vote. Mr. Fosdick?"
"Yes."
"Yes," said the first new man, and the second.
