Chapter 29: A Boy
Matt came through the shop door at a dead run in his leather apron.
He looked at my face.
He looked at the floor.
"Is that..."
"Yes."
"Now?"
"Now, Matt."
He turned around and shouted into the shop.
"Truck! Somebody get the bag! The bag by the door! The blue one!"
Four apprentices ran in four different directions.
The old man got up out of his lawn chair against every doctor's orders.
He walked to the house and came back with the blue bag himself.
"Go," he said, and pushed it into Matt's chest. "I've got the furnace."
"You can't do the furnace."
"I can sit next to it and yell. Go."
The hospital in Pittsburgh was an hour down the river.
Matt made it in fifty-one minutes, and he told me so, twice.
He timed my contractions out loud with his watch on the steering wheel.
"Four minutes apart."
"I know."
"Three and a half."
"Matt, I know. I'm the one having them."
"I'm just saying it out loud. It helps me."
"It does not help me."
He reached over and held my hand.
