Chapter 11: The Banquet
The grand ballroom of the Haeryong Hotel had sixty chandeliers.
Four hundred and twelve people sat under them in black and silver, and every one of them was watching the door.
Do-yoon and Jae-wook went in together.
Do-yoon wore a pale grey suit with a silver pin, and Jae-wook wore deep wine with the waistcoat buttoned to the throat for once.
Jae-wook's hand lay at the small of Do-yoon's back.
It was the lightest touch, and it held Do-yoon's whole spine up.
Cameras flashed in a long white stutter.
"Smile," Jae-wook murmured.
"I'm smiling."
"You're baring your teeth."
"That's how I smile."
"God, I love it."
Do-yoon nearly missed a step.
Jae-wook pretended he hadn't said it.
Gi-cheol sat at the head of their table with a glass already in his hand.
"The happy couple," he said, rising. "Welcome. Do sit. I took the liberty of keeping family close."
"How kind," Do-yoon said.
"Not at all." Gi-cheol's smile was warm and his eyes were flat. "A man should be near at such a time."
The courses came.
Nobody tasted them.
Between the fish and the beef, the master of ceremonies tapped a glass, and Gi-cheol was on his feet before anyone else.
"I'd like to propose a toast," Gi-cheol said, and the room hushed.
"To my nephew, and to his new husband."
"A marriage of two great houses, made by their grandfathers' wills. May it last the full twelve months."
A ripple of laughter went around the room.
