Chapter 18: The Cassette

The recorder worked on its second try.

Jae-wook found the mains cord in a kitchen drawer, wound neatly around a tin of matches, and plugged it in beside the kettle.

They sat at the table, in the lamplight, with the sea heavy under the floor.

Do-yoon pressed the button.

The tape hissed for three seconds.

Then a man's voice came out of the speaker, young, smooth and reasonable.

Do-yoon knew it at once.

It was the voice that had read out his board minutes for ten years.

"Father, I'll be brief. I have the dates."

A second voice answered, older, tired and very calm.

"I know what you have, Gi-cheol."

"Then you know the price."

"I take the deputy seat at Haeryong through the trust."

"You are my son."

"I'm a son who has seen what you hide. Choose. Or I take the envelope to the newspapers on Monday."

There was a long pause.

Wind rattled the shutter on the tape.

"If I agree," said Do-yoon's grandfather, "you leave Hwan alone. You leave us both alone."

"I'll leave you alone as long as you're useful."

Click.

The tape ran on in hiss.

Neither man moved.

Do-yoon found that his hands were flat on the table and that the wood under them had gone damp.

He realized he was shaking from the shoulders down, in a steady, hard vibration that he couldn't stop.
