Chapter 11: August

Laurence held up a fat envelope for the cameras.

"Five Novembers," he said. "My uncle on State Street at two in the morning, looking at her windows. Years before she ever left me."

He passed out the photos like campaign flyers.

The reporters took them. Phones came up to photograph the photographs.

On the other side of the glass, people in the crowd were already turning to look at me. Holding up their own phones.

Felix took a step toward the side door.

I put my hand on his arm.

"Term one," I said. "My windows. This is happening in my window."

He stopped.

I walked out the side door onto the sidewalk.

The cold hit my wet hair. The crowd made a noise and then went quiet, the way the glass room had gone quiet on the night of the cake.

The reporters swung their cameras off Laurence and onto me.

I walked right up to him, close enough to see the sweat on his lip.

"You want the real story?" I said. "Fine. Here's all of it."

I turned to the cameras.

"Before Thursday last week, I'd spoken to Felix Bancroft at maybe twelve family dinners. He passed me the salt. Once he asked me how the windows were going. I said fine."

Somebody in the crowd laughed.

"Five years ago a man on that sidewalk caught my ladder. I didn't know who he was until last Sunday."

I held up my hand with the brass ring on it.

"Nothing happened with him until I was his wife. Not one thing. You can print that."
