Chapter 9: Not Anymore
By noon, the players had stopped being delighted.
In four hours, Emberfall lost thirty thousand of them, and the chat, which had loved us for twelve days, turned on us in one afternoon.
FAKE. LIARS. I KNEW IT. HE'S THE AXE.
I watched it on Gus's phone, sitting on his couch with a cat on my shoulder.
"They'll cool off," Gus said.
"They won't."
"They'll cool off a little."
"The number is four hundred and eighty thousand," I said. "It was five hundred and ten this morning."
"You've been looking."
"I live in a state of looking."
The phone lit up, and Gus took a step backward.
An official notice, from the company account.
LIVE NOW: A statement from Lorne Roark.
"I'm not watching that," I said.
I watched it.
He was in the supply room, behind the desk, in the same navy suit he'd worn for two weeks.
He had no script and no one running the camera. It was fixed to a shelf and pointed up at his face.
He looked like he hadn't slept.
"My name is Lorne Roark," he said. "I run this company. I have something to say about the marriage."
The chat moved so fast I couldn't read it.
"The marriage began as a number," Lorne said.
I put my hand over my mouth.
"I wrote terms on the back of a company form, and I did it because the board wanted this game closed in thirty days, and a clip of my new employee grabbing me had brought ninety thousand people through the door. I needed them to stay. So I asked her to stay too."
