Chapter 19: The Hunt
Nobody on the porches moved.
Corbin stood at the gate with his ruined hand hanging at his side and his mouth still open on the last word.
"End it," Bram said. "End what, exactly? Her, or the pup?"
Corbin didn't answer.
"Then here's what you do," Bram said.
"At the solstice you stand up in front of every Alpha she's invited, and you say that."
Corbin backed away from the bars.
"I won't speak against her."
"Then you're still hers," Sienna said from the step.
He looked at her, and at me, and at the twelve faces on the porches.
Then he got into his SUV and drove away up the track without his lights.
"He won't," the one-eyed man said.
"Maybe not," I said.
I held up Corbin's phone.
"But this will."
Four weeks later, on the twentieth of December, at ten at night, the dogs went mad.
I was standing at the stove with the widow, stirring a pot I couldn't smell anymore without being sick.
The one-eyed man came in from the porch with snow on his shoulders and the shotgun already broken open.
