Chapter 19: The Page
The page came on Saturday morning by courier, in a cream envelope, before I had finished the first batch.
The courier was a boy in a bow tie who would not look at me, and he made me sign for it.
I read it standing in the kitchen with flour to my wrists.
It was typed on the stationery of a law office on Poydras Street, and it said four things.
The first was that a sum of twenty-seven thousand dollars had gone missing from the burial fund of the Bayou Rose Benevolent Society.
The second was that the keyholder to the hall's kitchen and office, Mrs. Camille Beaumont, had access to the cabinet where the book was kept.
The third was that a complaint would go to the police on Monday.
It would be dropped only if she signed the attached quit-claim of Beaumont's King Cake & Pie to the Society, as restitution.
The fourth was a line at the bottom for my signature.
Under it was a note that Mr. Julien Beaumont would withdraw his petition and "welcome his wife home to Ursulines Avenue."
I read it twice.
Then I took off my apron and walked out, and Nadine said, "Where are you going?" and I said, "To fix it."
Rafe was in the dining room with his mother, the two of them sharing a pot of coffee over the morning paper.
Sal stood in the doorway to the hall with his thermos, as he always did.
I put the page on the table in front of Rafe and laid a pen on top of it.
"It's from Odette's lawyer," I said.
He read it.
