Chapter 22: On the Shore
Severen laughed first.
"Fight me?" He looked down at Cassien on the carpet. "Majesty, I taught him to hold a sword. He cried when I broke his wrist."
"He was nine," said Isandor. "He isn't now."
"He held Tarrow Ford for nine days," said one of the Ostrel lords, a young man at the back.
Severen's smile thinned by a hair.
The Princess of Ostrel stood up.
"Agreed," she said. "At dawn, on the spit at the narrows, where both shores can see."
"Highness," said Severen. "This is a family matter."
"You made it a matter for Ostrel when you asked for my hand on a staircase."
She turned to Isandor.
"Majesty, you will stay in my tent tonight as my guest. Unarmed, and under my guard."
"Gladly."
"And the prisoner?" Severen asked.
The Princess looked at Cassien for a moment.
"He is your brother," she said. "Keep him."
They put Cassien in Severen's tent with his hands still tied, on a stool by the brazier.
Severen sent his guards outside.
Then he poured himself a cup of wine and sat down across from Cassien with his long legs stretched out.
For a while he just looked at him.
"You look like Mother," he said. "Around the mouth. She always looked like that when she was about to be difficult."
