Chapter 7: He'd Let You
Isandor was lying in the hayloft above the tack room when his husband came into the stable to sabotage his saddle.
He had come down to see his horse, which he did when he could not sleep.
He had not slept properly since a Lisvaine boy put a knife to his throat in front of the whole court.
He heard the door and the soft boots, and he knew the walk.
Cassien was light on his feet.
He moved.
Isandor lay on his stomach in the dark and watched through a gap in the boards.
Cassien knelt by the saddle with the gold sun on its flap.
When he had finished, he stayed there, with the strap in one hand and the blade in the other.
He sat on the tack room floor for a long time.
Then he put his forehead down on the saddle, just for a moment.
He hung it back on its peg exactly as he had found it, and went out.
Isandor lay in the hay and laughed into his sleeve until his ribs hurt.
Three years ago, on the roof at Haldermere, Cassien had sat the same way, with his knees up and his head down and rain dripping off his hair.
