Chapter 9: Where I Can Watch Him
Isandor pushed himself off Cassien's shoulder and stood on his own.
He swayed once.
Then he stepped in front of Cassien, so that every crossbow Corvain had was pointed at his chest instead.
"Lower them," he said.
Corvain's men looked at their master.
"Majesty, you are wounded. You are not yourself. The consort cut your girth, I heard him shout it, and the whole hunt heard."
"I heard him too," Isandor said. "He shouted it to stop me jumping."
"He is a Lisvaine assassin standing among Lisvaine assassins!"
"Those men were hired in a tavern in the low city two days ago."
Isandor's voice did not rise at all.
"For silver. By a man in brown."
The forest went quiet.
Corvain's face did something small and quick.
"I don't know what Your Majesty means."
"Then lower your crossbows, cousin, before I decide that I do."
Nobody moved.
Blood ran down Isandor's sleeve and dripped from his fingers onto the leaves.
Cassien stood behind him with his brother's dagger and did not know who he would stab first.
Then hooves came through the trees, a great many of them.
Ilvessa rode out at the head of forty men in imperial black.
She sat her horse sideways in a fur cloak, with her cane across the saddle.
She looked at the crossbows.
She looked at her nephew's shoulder.
"Corvain," she said pleasantly. "You are pointing weapons at the Emperor. Do stop. People will talk."
The crossbows went down.
An hour later, in Isandor's chamber, Cassien took the bolt out himself.
