"Let go of my arm," I said.

"Tell him yourself."

"Dad."

"Or I will."

Security was already coming down the hall.

Two guards, walking fast.

My father didn't wait for them.

He raised his voice so the whole corridor could hear.

"Mr. Kastar! Your wife has forty-one thousand dollars in a savings account. She's been stacking it for years. You might want to know what she's planning with it."

The guards took him by the elbows.

He laughed as they walked him backward.

"Ask her where it's going!"

The elevator doors closed on him.

No one in the hallway looked at me.

They were all very busy with their charts.

The night nurse I'd trained stared at the cart she was restocking.

She had been counting the same box of gauze for a full minute.

Damien walked down the hall at an even pace.

He stopped an arm's length away.

"Forty-one thousand," he said.

"It's mine."

"I didn't say it wasn't."

"It's every extra shift for six years. Nights. Holidays. Double Christmases."

"What was it for?"

"Lily. To get her out."

"Out of what?"

"Out of him. Out of the debt. Out of any of it."

"It wouldn't have been enough."
