Chapter 16: Nico

"Hello, Damien," Nico said again.

The voice was warm and a little rough.

Damien made a sound I had never heard from a person.

He reached for the phone.

I caught his wrist.

"Wait."

"That's him."

"Wait. Please."

On the screen, the mouth kept moving.

"I've missed you. I'm sorry it's taken so long. I need your help."

His lips shaped the words half a beat after the sound reached us.

I'd spent six years reading monitors.

You learn to feel it when a trace and a pulse disagree.

"Ask him something," I said.

"What?"

"Something only Nico would know."

Damien's throat worked.

"What did you give me the day you got your license?"

The face smiled.

"A key, Dami. You gave me a key."

Damien's eyes went to mine.

He gave one small shake of his head.

It wasn't a key.

He had given Nico the car.

And Nico had never once called him Dami.

I didn't wait.

I took the woman's arm and walked her back into the ballroom, phone and all.

She was too startled to pull away.

Heads turned as we came through the doors.

Damien followed a step behind me, and I heard him breathing through his teeth.

"Marcus," I said, loud.
