"Then take the contract and leave," he'd said.
I stood there with the words in my ears.
"You'd pay it anyway," I said.
"Yes."
"Even if I walk. Even if the debt comes back on me."
"The debt is Rourke's problem now. He's in a cell."
"That isn't what I asked."
"I know what you asked."
He didn't take it back.
That was the thing.
He stood in his own living room with his shirt wrecked and his jaw locked, and he let it stand.
I went down the hall.
I pulled my duffel from the closet and shoved in what was mine.
Scrubs. A toothbrush. Lily's plant.
I left the cream gown on the floor where it had fallen.
I left the ring on the nightstand.
It made a small bright sound against the wood.
Lily was in the doorway when I turned.
"Ava, don't."
