Chapter 16: My Sister
Keira's POV
The grass was wet to my belly, and every step down the slope was louder than the one before.
Fourteen hundred rogues watched a white wolf walk toward them.
Nobody drew a bow. They did not know what to make of me.
My wolf knew. She had been quiet all night, and now she said the word she always said.
*Mine.*
I did not know what she meant by it. The valley, I thought, and the pack, and the man behind me on the ridge with a hole in his side.
I stopped forty paces from the rock where my father stood.
I lifted my head and howled.
It rolled down the valley and back off the cliffs. It was long and clear and it did not shake.
I had never howled like that in my life. I had never had anybody to howl for.
The Rogue King laughed out loud.
"I know that call," he said. "Every white wolf learns it from the dark. Nobody teaches it."
He stepped down off his rock, unhurried, holding his bandaged arm against his chest.
"You are calling the old challenge, daughter. I am touched."
"But you know the law, surely. A white wolf cannot call it alone. Her pack must stand behind her and speak her name as theirs."
He spread his hands.
"Ashgrove has hated you for eighteen years. Who here will say it?"
The rogues laughed.
It spread across the whole valley, rough and cruel. Somewhere in the front rank I saw Cade, in a rogue's leather coat, with a long wrapped bundle under his arm. He was not laughing.
I stood in the wet grass, and I did not turn around.
