Chapter 13: Loading

Departure was 6:30 sharp, and at 6:30 sharp I stood in my driveway at Stop Zero with nobody to stop for.

Number Nine idled at the curb with its sign in the windshield.

Lucy sat behind the wheel with her fleece over her face.

"Dad," she said, without moving. "Nobody comes at six-thirty."

"It's on the itinerary," I said.

"Dell Street gets off third shift at seven. Then somebody has to find a shoe."

"A shoe?"

"There is always one shoe," said Lucy.

Most of Dell Street arrived at twenty to eight, with bags, and the loading began.

Two parents couldn't leave work before noon.

Lucy had put their children on the bus and promised we wouldn't leave without them.

I could have sent the bus ahead and waited with the van.

Instead I wanted my three vehicles together, in the order on my page.

I had a pet policy in Tab 6.

The line brought four cats in three carriers, a dog in a stroller, a parrot in a laundry basket and a rabbit.

"That's more than one per household," I said.

"They're not pets," said the man with the goat. "They're a bloc."
