Chapter 17: The Elbow
The widower from number two took the van, and the man with the goat took the flatbed.
I sat in Number Nine, in the first row across from Elspeth, with the binder against my chest.
Elspeth sat in seat three, directly behind my daughter, with the cardigan pocket open and her eyes on the bandage.
It was dark now, and Quarry Road was a single lane cut into the side of the Knob.
The bus lights showed trees on one side and nothing on the other.

I had driven the Elbow once, in a minivan, with a window up and a daughter beside me who still had a voice.
It is a hairpin at nine hundred and sixty feet.
My father had cut a footpath down the face of the Knob that skipped the switchbacks.
