Chapter 19: I Do

Cedric went first, because he said he would cry too hard if he waited.

He took Hannah's hands and unfolded a sheet of paper from his pocket.

"Hannah, I've written you something," he said. "It's short. My students voted on the length."

The guests laughed.

"I promise to leave the recorder at school," he said. "All of them. I promise to eat the vegetables you put on my plate and not hide them in my napkin."

"You do hide them," Hannah said.

"I promise to stop hiding them."

More laughter, and Annette's wet, honking laugh above it.

Cedric's voice changed.

"I promise to be on your side in every room," he said. "Even when I don't know the whole story, I'll ask which side you're standing on and stand there. You taught me that this week."

He looked at his paper and then folded it.

"That's all I've got," he said. "I love you."

Hannah laughed and wiped her cheek with her wrist.

Then she turned to face the chairs.

She did not unfold anything.

"I wrote mine on the back of a seating chart," she said. "Then I lost it. So this is just what I know."

She took a breath.

"Cedric, I promise to tell you the truth, especially the ugly parts, and to ask you for it back."

"That's fair," Cedric said.

"I've learned this month that people can look after you and lie to you in the same breath," she said. "I don't want to be that kind of wife, or that kind of person."
