Chapter 7: The Forged Line

Annette's kitchen smelled of burned toast and coffee, and she made me sit before she let me talk.

"Eat," she said, and put a plate in front of me. "You're grey in the face."

"I'm not hungry."

"I was a nurse for thirty years. That wasn't a question."

I ate half the toast.

Then I laid the forged hotel form on the table and told her everything from the garage to the café.

She read the form once and set it down.

"That's not your handwriting," she said.

"It's a copy of it. Someone traced it."

"Or stamped it, the way the manager said." She tapped the signature. "Do you have any other papers with your name on them that you didn't sign?"

I hadn't thought of that.

I went through my bag and found the mail I'd carried around all week without opening it, a stack of envelopes from Haldane Freight's corporate office.

Under a furniture catalogue, there was a thick packet marked Shareholder Notice.

I own forty percent of Haldane Freight.

My mother's house was sold, and the money went to Russell twenty years ago to start the company, and he put the shares in my name because he said it made me a partner.

I had never voted them.

Russell said the paperwork was boring and he'd handle it.

I read the notice now.

It said that I, Joanna Haldane, had appointed a proxy to vote my shares at the next meeting.

The proxy was named in a line near the bottom.
