Chapter 18: Stop Work

"I want my deposit back," the young husband said. "Today."

"So do we," said the sister in the visor.

"So do I."

"All of it."

They were all talking at once now, closing in around the tent.

Beverly put her hands up.

"Everyone, please. This is a paperwork error. My son will have it fixed by Friday."

"Your son is the one who forged it," I said.

Mason took a step toward me.

Cooper took one step too, and Mason stopped.

Beverly's phone rang in her jacket pocket.

She glanced at the screen, and I watched the color leave her face.

She didn't answer.

It stopped, and then it rang again right away.

"Answer it, Beverly," said the man with the toddler. "Maybe it's somebody who believes you."

She answered it.

She turned her back to us and walked a few steps toward the model unit.

But the gravel was quiet, and the buyers were quiet, and Beverly Ridgeway had never once in her life learned to lower her voice.

"No," she said. "No, you can't. We've banked with you for twenty years."

A pause.

"An anonymous call this morning. From who?"

A longer pause.

"Thirty days? I can't find eleven million dollars in thirty days."
