The winter show at the Yellow Gate Kindergarten began in the late afternoon on the first Friday in December.
The hall smelled of radiators and oranges.
There were eighty small chairs for the parents and a stage made of two dining tables pushed together.
Mu Qing sat in the third row with a coat across his knees.
Xu's knee pressed against his through the whole of the programme, and neither of them moved it.
Xu Zhengyuan sat beside him in a plain grey sweater that Fan Yue had picked out.
He had come on the early train from Ningbo, because he had been told to be there before the doors opened.
He had been there long before.
"You're early," Mu Qing had said.
"I wanted a good seat."
"It's a school hall. The seats are the same."
"It's the third row," said Xu, "centre."
He had checked the programme four times.
The secretary sat behind them in a suit, with a camera borrowed from the company's marketing department and a face of great solemnity.
Fan Yue was beside him, filming everything with her phone held vertically.
The teacher stood in the wings in a long green dress, with a clipboard, and gave the hall a look that silenced it.
