Chapter 18: Park Hill

Zo's POV

Dirk was sitting on my mother's grave when I came up the row at dawn.

Not on it.

Beside it, on the cold ground, with his back against the spruce and his hands hanging between his knees.

He had no coat again.

I stopped ten feet away.

Zuri was with Mason at the house, asleep in the crib with the stars on the ceiling.

I had walked up the hill alone in the dark with a thermos, because I could not sleep and because I had known where he would be.

I had not known he'd be here before me.

"How long?" I said.

"Since four," Dirk said.

"It's nine degrees," I said.

"I've had worse," he said.

"You always say that."

"It's always true," he said.

I sat down on the ground, three feet from him, with the stone between us and the lake going pink below.

I poured coffee into the thermos cap and held it out.

He looked at it.

Then he took it, careful, so that his fingers did not touch mine, and drank.

"I owe you a thing I said I'd tell you," Dirk said.

"The scar."

"The scar.

"And the rest of it."

"You don't have to," I said.
