Chapter 10: Cowboy Church
The cowboy church met in a metal building off the county road, on folding chairs.
The stage was made of pallets, with a steer skull nailed over the pulpit.
The preacher stood behind it in a clean pearl-snap shirt.
He was fifty-eight, soft-spoken and white-haired, and on Monday nights he sat at Hoyt's table with the council.
On Sunday mornings he preached to two hundred people in boots.
I sat in the back row, between Jolene and Hoyt, with a hymnal in my lap.
It was the fourth Sunday in November.
For two weeks, every night had belonged to someone.
I had slept in the bunkhouse on every one of them.
I had stopped counting how many times I woke up with my feet muddy.
Somebody always had a coat on me.
I had stopped asking.
"Turn with me to the book of Ruth," the preacher said.
