The Randall County arena smelled of sawdust and hot dogs, and four packs of the Panhandle sat in its bleachers waiting to watch me answer.
I stood in the dirt of the ring in Hoyt's long oilskin duster, with nothing on under it.
His hand rested warm on the back of my neck.
The council stood around me in a half circle with their hats on.
Jolene sat in the front row with her arms folded and her chin up.
Three rows behind her sat my mother, small and gray in her church coat, with her hands knotted in her lap.
Royce Loving walked out of the Amarillo section with a microphone in his hand and his father's pack at his back.
He wore a new pearl-snap shirt, and he smiled up at the stands.
"Friends," he said.
"In November I came to the Tarver place to collect what my father gave me."
"She is a woman who has never shifted, never once, in twenty-five years," he said.
