Chapter 14: The Vial

Anders's POV

I stayed in her grandmother's kitchen until my hands stopped shaking.

It took longer than I wanted to admit.

Every part of me that had been trained for four years was shouting at the door.

Go. She's calling for you. You always go.

Marit sat across the table with her grandmother's tea going cold in front of her.

She didn't ask me why I'd stayed.

She only looked at the closed door, and then at me, waiting to see whether I would change my mind.

I didn't.

Torben found us there an hour later, red-faced from running, with snow to his thighs.

"I looked for you at the Alpha house," he said. "The whole place is in an uproar. Linnea's on the sofa with three women fanning her, and she keeps asking where you are."

"I'm here," I said.

"Good." He dropped into a chair. "Because I need to tell you something, and I didn't want to say it in front of them."

"Go on."

"Last night I covered the east watch. Around two, I saw someone on the river road, alone, in a gray cardigan, walking fast."

Marit's head came up.

"You're sure," she said.

"She had a basket. She went out past the East Gate post, stood there a minute with her face to the trees, and walked back." Torben rubbed his jaw. "She never stopped once, Anders. She never leaned on anything. She walked four miles in the dark in the snow like a girl on her way to a dance."

"And this morning she collapsed."

"This morning she collapsed in front of the whole house."

I stood up.

"Stay with her," I said to Marit.

"No," Marit said. "I'm coming."

"Marit."

"I won't be left out of the one room where this gets proved." She was already taking her coat off the hook. "Besides, she'll cry better for you alone."
