Chapter 10: Wool Room
The shearing crew came on Monday, and by Wednesday the shed was a roaring, stinking, wonderful mess.
Clippers buzzed on six stands.
Fleeces hit the table in great grey-white drifts, and the air was thick with lanolin and dust and the bleating of sheep waiting their turn.
Fionn stood at the classing table with his sleeves rolled to the elbow, sorting wool by grade.
It was the first job on the ranch he had ever loved.
"You're quick at that," said the shearer on the next stand.
He was a rangy man of thirty with sunburned forearms and a gap in his teeth, and he had been smiling at Fionn since Monday.
"I've done it three years."
"Never seen anyone throw a fleece like that. You should come out with the crew. Eight weeks, good pay, nobody's boss."
Fionn laughed.
"Is that a job offer?"
"It might be." The shearer leaned an elbow on the table. "Or it might be something else. You tell me."
Behind Fionn, something heavy and silent filled the doorway of the shed.
He did not need to turn.
His skin knew it, a prickle from the nape to the base of his spine, and the pull in his chest drew tight.
