Chapter 7: Glove Box
Mikel watched Fionn read his own name on the envelope, and every muscle in his back went hard.
"Put it back," he said.
Fionn did not look up.
He stood in the open door of the truck, rain running off his hair.
The blue crest of the university was in his fingers.
"It's mine," he said.
"Casey."
"It's addressed to me. It's been opened. By you."
Mikel said nothing, because there was nothing to say that he could stand to hear.
Fionn folded the envelope in half, slid it inside his wet shirt against his skin, and got into the truck.
He did not say a word on the drive home.
He got out at the lambing barn, walked inside, and left Mikel sitting in the cab with the wipers going and the engine running.
Mikel put his forehead on the wheel.
Two springs.
He had told himself it was to keep the pack's omega from running off to a city.
Once he had told himself it was the land.
The truth was smaller and worse.
He had read the letter in the lot behind the post office, standing up.
It had said Fionn would study animal science in the fall.
All Mikel had thought was that the house would be empty.
