Chapter 13: Tuesday
Seo-won had rented the whole cafe.
It was a narrow place in Yeonnam-dong with a dozen tables and a window full of ferns.
He had it for the whole of Tuesday morning, and the owner had named the price before he finished asking.
He had hired a violinist for the corner.
He had hired a florist, and she had put white ranunculus on every table.
A baker had built croissants into a pyramid on the counter.
He stood in the middle of it with his hands behind his back.
He was four days into a suspension without pay, and he had never felt so sure of a plan.
Tae-min came in straight off the night shift.
His hair was flat on one side, and his jacket smelled of diesel.
He stopped in the doorway.
The violinist reached the sweet part of something.
"Seo-won," he said slowly. "Where is everybody?"
"It's only us."
"The whole cafe?"
"Until it closes."
Tae-min looked at the florist, who was tying a ribbon around a chair.
He looked at the pyramid.
"Is that a pyramid of croissants?"
"It's a tower."
"Of course it is."
He sat at the nearest table and took the top croissant off the tower.
The whole thing slid sideways, and the baker caught it with a small shriek.
Tae-min laughed so hard he had to put his forehead down on the ranunculus.
Seo-won watched him and thought, it's working.
Then Tae-min sat up with petals in his hair, and he had stopped laughing.
"How much was this?"
"It doesn't matter."
"Seo-won."
"Four hundred thousand won. For the morning."
"You aren't being paid."
"I have savings."
"You have rent on a roof and a laptop you're not allowed to use." Tae-min said it gently, and it still landed.
"I wanted to do something good for you."
"I know. You bought me a watch. You booked me a leaf." He picked a petal out of his hair.
"You put your seal on a table in front of six people."
"Everything you do for me is huge."
"Is that bad?"
"It's not bad." Tae-min turned the croissant in his fingers. "It feels like you're paying me back for something."
