Chapter 14: The Drill
Ko Tae-min climbed Stair B in the dark before dawn with his air bottle on his back and his mask on his face.
Ga-ram had left the service door on the latch and gone back to bed, sick with nerves.
The stairwell was empty and cold.
Every lobby door he passed was glass.
He counted them the way Seo-won had counted floors in the dark, one at a time.
Tae-min had never been afraid of a staircase in his life.
He had gone up a thousand of them with fifteen kilos on his back, because someone was always at the top.
Tonight it was different.
This one had a landing on the fourth floor, and he knew what was going to happen on it.
He stopped on the third flight and held the rail.
The mask hissed with every breath he took, loud and close, the loudest sound in the world.
He had told Seo-won that in the station, grinning.
He reached the fourth landing and stood on it.
It was a gray concrete square with a yellow stripe on the edge of the step and a fire extinguisher in a box.
Nothing about it was special.
That was the part he couldn't stand.
