Chapter 19: The Twelfth
The night before the opening, Tae-min came up the rooftop stair without knocking.
He still had the key Seo-won had cut for him in November.
He found the lights off and the drafting table cleared.
Seo-won sat on the edge of the bed in his dress shirt, fully buttoned, with the cream card in his hands.
"You haven't eaten," Tae-min said.
"I'm not hungry."
"You've been sitting there since I left this morning."
"I've been thinking about the stairs."
Tae-min put his bag down and crossed the room.
He knelt on the floor between Seo-won's knees and took the card out of his fingers.
His right hand was whole again, pink and shining, and he laid it flat against Seo-won's chest.
"Tomorrow is tomorrow," he said. "Tonight it's Wednesday, and nothing is on fire."
"That's what you said about Tuesday."
"And I was right about Tuesday."
Seo-won laughed, and it came out wrong, and Tae-min got up on the bed and pulled him in against his shoulder.
He held him hard.
He did not say that it would be fine.
He kissed the corner of his eye, then his temple, then his mouth.
It started slowly.
Then Seo-won's hands closed in his shirt and pulled, and it was no longer slow at all.
"Hey," Tae-min said into his mouth. "Hey. Seo-won."
"Don't talk. I need you to stop me thinking."
"I can do that."
He did it with all of himself.
He undid the dress shirt button by button, and this time there was no teasing in it, only a hunger he did not hide.
He pressed Seo-won down into the blue quilt and kissed the hollow of his throat, the ribs, the flat of his belly.
Seo-won arched under his mouth.
He had learned this body in the weeks since the first night, and this body had learned him back.
Tae-min knew now where to press and where to wait.
He knew that the long muscle at the small of the back would make him shudder.
He knew that his name said low against the hip would make him curse.
"Tell me what you need," Tae-min said.
"You. All of you. Hurry."
"No."
"Tae-min..."
"I'm going to take my time with you tonight." His voice had gone rough and sure. "I want to remember every second of it."
