Chapter 18: Waiting Room

Nikos's POV

At a quarter to seven on Thursday I walked into the waiting room at Bayview Medical Center with two coffees.

There were forty people in it.

A man held a towel to his hand, and a woman rocked a sleeping child on her shoulder.

A security guard looked me up and down and decided not to stop me.

I have walked into rooms with four armed men in them.

I had never been as afraid as I was crossing that linoleum.

At the glass window a triage nurse looked up.

"Can I help you?" she asked.

"I'm looking for Lena Wojcik."

"She's not on until seven. Are you a patient?"

"No," I said. "I am the man she's with."

It was louder than I meant.

Every head in the room turned.

The nurse at the window was an older woman with reading glasses on a chain.

She took her glasses off.

"The man she's with," she said.

"My name is Nikos Galanis," I said. "I'm six feet four, and I have caused her trouble."

"Go on, honey," the nurse said.

"I would like everyone who works with her to know that I am here on purpose."

"Honey," the nurse said slowly. "Is this about the plastic wrap?"

"Yes."

"We've all heard about the plastic wrap."

She turned and shouted through the glass.

"Hey! Hey, Lena's guy is here! He brought coffee!"

Doors opened.

Heads came out of curtains.

A resident leaned out of a hallway, and a tech in purple scrubs started to clap.
