Chapter 22: The Trap

Abel came down the stairs and stood between me and my brother.

He didn't touch him.

He didn't have to.

Lowell looked up at him, all six and a half feet of him, and his knees nearly went.

"I'm not here to light anything," Lowell said. "I came to tell you."

"Why?" Abel said.

My brother looked at me.

"Because she told me to decide who I want to be."

Abel looked at him for a long time.

Then he stepped aside.

The cook brought a chair and a bowl of stew, and fed it to him with a spoon, because he couldn't hold one.

He told us all of it between bites.

Iris had come to his hospital room that morning with flowers and a big smile for the nurses.

When the door shut, the smile went.

"She said the lookout goes Wednesday, and I carry the can," he said. "I said I can't carry anything. Look at me."

"She said, then you stand there in your jacket. That's all. So anybody who sees, sees you."

"The burned brother, finishing the job."

The younger sister said a word I'd never heard before.

"Who comes?" Abel asked.

"Iris. Two of Damien's men. Up the back way through the timber, the way I came in July."
