Chapter 23: Caught

The match jumped out of Iris's fingers.

Maybe the flash made her drop it. Maybe she threw it.

I never asked.

It landed on the bottom step, and the gas caught with a soft blue whump.

Fire ran up the first three stairs and licked at the rail.

"Now!" Sophie yelled.

The hose line came up out of the grass, and the nozzle opened with a roar.

Water hit Gran's stairs.

The fire hissed and spat, and went out.

Just like that.

The foot of the stairs steamed black in the starlight.

Iris stood in the spray with her mouth open, soaked to the skin, her white raincoat stuck to her.

The bigger man dropped both his cans on the rock.

The smaller one turned and ran for the timber.

Abel came over the catwalk rail, hung by his hands, and dropped the last ten feet onto the rock.

He landed between Iris and the trail.

She didn't try to run after that.

The cabin doors opened one by one.

The eldest elder came out of the third cabin on her cane, slow, with the other two elders behind her.

My mother walked beside them, holding the old woman's shawl.

The investigator stepped out of the fourth cabin, still writing in his notebook.

The cook came out with her skillet. The sisters came out with a shovel. The trapper came out with nothing at all and stood there.

Iris turned in a slow circle and looked at every one of them.
