Chapter 25: The Council

The packs came down the valley road all afternoon on the twenty-fifth.

Trucks with mud to the windows. Old sedans full of elders. A school bus painted green, from somewhere up past Helena.

Eleven packs. More wolves than I'd ever seen in one place.

By moonrise they filled the Moon Grove and spilled out into the meadow.

They stood among the burned cedars and looked up at the black trunks, and some of them shook their heads.

The council sat on the north side of the ring, where the Silverfir elders always sat.

Eleven Alphas in a row of carved chairs, and an elder beside each one.

Our eldest elder sat at the end with her cane across her knees.

In the middle sat the Northern Alpha.

He was the oldest Alpha there, white haired and broad, with a face like a split log.

He hadn't spoken to anyone since he got out of his truck.

Damien stood in front of the altar stone in a black suit, with his ring on.

Iris sat on a bench to one side between two Silverfir men, in a pale blue dress somebody had brought to the cell.

She'd been crying already. Her eyes were pink and perfect.

Abel sat on the accused's bench in the dirt, in front of the whole region.

I sat beside him.

So did Lowell, in his white gloves.

My parents were in the front row of the Silverfir pack.
