Chapter 13: Upside Down
Clara opened the envelope on the dorm steps, with the tea going cold beside her.
Miles did not take it from her hand to read it. He waited.
It was four pages. The first said that the Larkin Valley Credit Company was suing Clara Mercer for eleven thousand dollars, plus fees.
The second said she had twenty days to answer or the court would decide without her.
"They'll take it out of my pay," she said. "Then the library job, then the cafe. Then whatever I get after graduation."
"Clara."
"I'm fine."
"You're holding it upside down."
She looked. She turned it over.
He gave her a moment to be embarrassed, and then he said, "Can I finish today's sentence?"
"You already said it. You're scared of the plane."
"I didn't say why. You asked, and I said I'd tell you later."
She put the pages in her lap.
"Go on."
"I'm scared because I already said yes to Lisbon before you ever spoke to me, and now I want to stay, and I don't know if wanting to stay is fair to you."
Her throat hurt.
"That's a long sentence," she said.
"It has parts."
She almost laughed. It came out as a breath.
"Mine's easier," she said. "I'm scared you're only here because you feel sorry for me."
"I'm not."
"That's not a sentence. That's an answer."
"Fine." He turned on the step to face her. "I was in the stacks at midnight for three years. Nobody feels sorry for someone for three years."
